Despite sweltering heat and dangerous crashes, Davide Frattini of the Colavita/Sutter Home Men’s Cycling Team presented by Cooking Light proved himself the overall best climber in the 156-mile Philadelphia International Championships on Sunday, June 8th.  And Tina Pic of the Colavita/Sutter Home Women’s Cycling Team again demonstrated the strength, focus, and determination that has made her champion to deliver an impressive sprint for 6th place with mangled handle bars and abrasions on her body following a bad accident earlier in the 57.6-mile Liberty Classic.

Here’s Kirsten Robbins’ summary from the sidelines of the Commerce Bank Triple Crown:

Commerce Bank Triple Crown
Philadelphia International Championships
Philadelphia, PA
June 8, 2008

With Davide Frattini, Andy Guptill, Tyler Wren, Anibal Borrajo, Alejandro Borrajo, Seba Haedo, Kyle Wamsley and Luis Amaran starting, the Colavita/Sutter Home Men’s Cycling Team brought a squad that could be active and represented in breakaways and bring their sprinters to the podium. The Philadelphia International Championships consists of ten 14-mile laps, followed by three finishing circuits of three miles each. Tyler, Kyle, and Andy assumed responsibility for covering the first two laps, riding into several early breakaways.  Davide responded to the next series of attacks which resulted in a breakaway that succeeded for 91 miles, picking up points on each of the seven laps over Manayunk Wall and Lemon Hill and solidifying the lead of the event's overall climber's competition. Davide's breakaway was swallowed by the peloton before the start of the finishing circuits, where Alejandro, Seba, Luis and Tyler  were prepared to contest the field sprint.  An unfortunate accident on the descent off of the Manayunk Wall eliminated both Seba and Luis from the race.

"Unfortunately, we lost Seba Haedo and Luis Amaran in a crash," said Davide. "They were the riders who were going to save their legs for the finish and everyone else's job was to be in a breakaway.”  He continued, “This is a great result for me because I was feeling strong, even in the heat. I was able to represent the team for most of the race in a break away, gain points for the KOM competition and to show our strength in such a big race, different from a criterium. It means a lot to me and the team to have confidence for other big big races we will be competing in this year."

Alejandro Borrajo

Alejandro Borrajo was the top finisher for the Colavita/Sutter Home Men’s Team in the Triple Crown, placing 14th in the final standings.

Commerce Bank Triple Crown
Liberty Classic
Philadelphia, PA
June 8, 2008

Tina Pic, Iona Wynter Parks, Shontell Gauthier, Nichole Wangsgard, Tiffany Cromwell, and Alison Powers of the Colavita/Sutter Home Women’s Cycling Team lined up under near-record temperatures for the four-lap 56-mile Liberty Classic. Tiffany rode into two of the most significant mid-race breakaways, winning full points at the top of Manayunk Wall on the third lap. With the field intact with one lap to go, the women prepared to bring Tina to the line as the first American to win the Liberty Classic. An horrific accident off of the Manayunk Wall's technical descent crippled Tina's momentum coming into the finish. Her teammates rallied around her to bring her back into the field and in good position for the sprint. With abrasions to her body and mangled handle bars, Tina continued to persevere in an impressive sprint for 6th place.

Alison Powers

The Colavita/Sutter Home Women’s Team put two women in the top 10 in the first two legs of the Triple Crown. Alison Powers rode to a podium-worthy 3rd place finish in the 25-mile Lehigh Valley Classic, with Tina following in 5th.  Alison took 4th in the Commerce Bank Reading Classic and Shontell Gauthier finished 8th.   Final standings of the women’s event have not yet been released; check the results pages of www.ColavitaSutterHome.com for updates.
