Race Report by Kirsten Robbins
Sprinters Sebastian Haedo and Shontell Gauthier Stand 2nd on the Walterboro Podium
Blistering speeds were not enough to keep Shontell Gauthier and Tiffany Cromwell of the Colavita/Sutter Home Women’s Cycling Team presented by Cooking Light from making their presence know in the winning breakaway. After a flurry of attacks, the winning break of six riders snapped off the front of the field with 15 minutes remaining. Tiffany who is leading the best young rider competition, fought her way off the front of the break with three laps to go in pursuit of a solo victory. When the tiny Australian rider was reabsorbed into the break away, her teammate Shontell was ready to take on the sprint, capturing 2nd place. And demonstrating the depth of the Colavita/Sutter Home bench, Iona Wynter Parks and Nicky Wangsgard successfully put US National Champion Tina Pic in position to win the field sprint for 7th.
In the men’s race, the Colavita/Sutter Home Men’s Cycling Team presented by Cooking Light took matters into their own hands to set up a five-rider lead out for Argentinean sprinter Sebastian Haedo as the 140-rider launched into a field sprint. Teammates Luca Damiani and Kyle Wamsley spent the majority of the men's 90-minute race covering multiple threatening moves. Davide Frattini took a last lap flyer to catch one solo rider dangling off the front while Gustavo Artacho and Anibal Borrajo stayed in position at the front ready to lead Sebastian into the last corner.
