Colavita/Sutter Home Men’s Training Camp – San Luis, Argentina
Tour de San Luis
Report by Kirsten Robbins

Eight days of intense training in the foothills of the Andes Mountains in Argentina is already paying off for the Colavita/Sutter Home Men’s Cycling Team.  In the Prologue of the six-day Tour de San Luis, Argentina’s biggest cycling race (UCI 2.2), Alejandro Borrajo placed third in the 3.5km time trial, barely three seconds behind the first-place finisher, fellow Argentine Martin Garrido (Palmeiras Resort-Tavira).  Borrajo’s brother Anibal followed in sixth.  The Tour de San Luis continues with the Stage 1 168.4km race from the city of San Luis to Villa Mercedes.  View a photo of Alejandro’s podium appearance from one of Argentina’s leading newspapers here.

The invitation to race in the second annual Tour de San Luis led the Colavita/Sutter Home Men’s Cycling Team to organize a pre-season training camp to take advantage of the favorable climate. “Training at this time of year in Argentina is incredible and I know it is the best way for the team to prepare for the start of the North American racing calendar in California,” said Director Sportif Sebastian Alexandre, a third-generation champion Argentinean cyclist who has ridden with the Colavita teams from their inception in 2002 through 2006.  The Colavita/Sutter Home squad includes Argentine natives Alejandro and Anibal Borrajo, Sebastian Haedo, and Gustavo Artacho, who welcomed teammates Anthony Colby, Kyle Wamsley, Andy Guptill, Tyler Wren, Davide Frattini, and Rodney Santiago for high-intensity training and climbing, combined with team-building sessions focusing on lead-outs, rotations, and strategy.  The cyclists also used the time to test ride the new team-issued Jamis bikes, giving them rave reviews for quick responsiveness, acceleration, and handling skills.  “We’re thrilled with the new Jamis bike,” said Alexandre. “It handles well under all conditions and because it is stiff with a shorter wheel base and very light, it responds extremely fast for both sprinters and climbers.”

The Colavita/Sutter Home Men’s Cycling Team presented by Cooking Light will return to North America to race the Merco Credit Union Cycling Classic in March and will then join the Colavita/Sutter Home Women’s Cycling Team for four days of joint training in Yosemite National Park.
